Portable appliance testing

PAT testing in Bideford & North Devon

I carry out portable appliance testing for landlords, businesses and other customers across North Devon. The right inspection and testing approach depends on the equipment, how it is used and the environment it is used in.

The service

What is PAT testing?

Portable appliance testing (PAT) is the inspection and, where appropriate, electrical testing of portable electrical equipment. A visual inspection is an important part of the process; not every item needs the same electrical test.

PAT testing is separate from an EICR, which assesses a property's fixed electrical installation. If you need both services, mention that when you enquire.

Equipment

What can be checked?

Examples include kettles, toasters, extension leads and other portable electrical equipment used in rental properties, offices, shops, workshops and shared spaces.

The equipment list, its condition and how it is used help determine which inspection and tests are appropriate.

A suitable approach

Testing based on use and risk

There is no single testing interval that suits every appliance in every setting. The type of equipment, frequency of use, environment, previous damage and the results of earlier checks all matter when planning an appropriate inspection schedule.

Tell me what equipment you have, where it is used and whether you have previous records. I can discuss a suitable scope for the work.

Records & next steps

Clear results for your equipment

If an item shows damage or does not meet the relevant checks, it should not simply be returned to use. I will explain the finding and discuss what action is appropriate for the equipment.

If you have a required format or need records for a property or workplace, mention it when arranging the visit.
