Tell me what is happening

Describe the symptoms

When you get in touch, explain what has stopped working, when the issue began and whether it happens repeatedly or under particular conditions. If a protective device has tripped, note which circuit is affected if you can identify it safely.

Do not remove covers or attempt electrical repairs yourself.

Diagnosis

Find the cause of the problem

Fault finding involves assessing the reported symptoms and carrying out suitable checks to identify the issue. The approach depends on the installation, the affected circuit and what is accessible.

Once the findings are understood, I can explain the options and any further investigation that may be needed.

Repairs

Put the problem right

Where the cause is identified and the work is agreed, I can carry out suitable electrical repairs. The repair needed depends on the fault, the condition of the installation and any parts or wiring affected.

If more work is needed than can be confirmed during the initial assessment, I will explain the next steps before proceeding.

If there are warning signs

Keep clear of immediate hazards

If equipment is hot, sparking, smoking or smells of burning, keep clear. Switch off the affected circuit at the consumer unit only if it is safe to do so. If there is a fire, call 999.

Do not touch damaged or exposed wiring, or dismantle electrical accessories.
